Professional Liability Insurance

The profession of Occupational Therapy demands personal interaction with people on a day-to-day basis. You are faced with situations on a daily basis, where you are open to the possibility of lawsuits and significant defense costs. Your clients could hold you responsible for damages they have received, resulting from a negligent act, error, omission or malpractice arising out of your professional capacity as an occupational therapist.

As a member of CAOT, you are eligible to obtain a limit of $5,000,000 Professional Liability insurance at a cost that has been significantly decreased for all members. While this particular coverage is imperative to protect the risk exposure of your practice, we also understand that your individual needs may vary, and accordingly have provided you with different coverage options allowing you to select what specifically best suits your requirements.

The Professional Liability policy is on a “claims made” policy form. This means that you must have coverage in place when the claim is first brought forward. If you allow your policy to lapse the policy will no longer respond to any claims brought forward, even if the incident happened while you were insured. If you are leaving the profession of Occupational Therapy, there is a free 12-month extension of coverage.
