Frequently asked questions about personal insurance
Q: What should I do if I have a claim?A: Contact your insurance broker as soon as possible. If your claim occurs outside normal business hours, dial your insurance company using the toll free emergency number.
Q: What is the advantage of dealing with an Insurance Broker?
A: An insurance broker can offer unbiased, professional advice. They represent several insurance companies and can review your personal insurance portfolio and develop a program that will suit your individual requirements.
Q: Does my automobile policy cover me outside Canada?
A: If you are driving your car outside of Canada, contact your insurance broker to confirm that coverage applies. Most insurance companies will cover you in Canada or United States, however, exclude coverage in Mexico.
Q: If I have a car accident, what information should I collect at the time of the incident?
A: The name, phone number, drivers license and license plate number of anyone involved in the accident. You should also obtain the names and phone numbers of any witnesses and police officers at the scene of the accident. Lastly, obtain the insurance information from any involved individuals (i.e. insurance company name and policy number).
Q: Is it worth it to file a small claim?
A: Sometimes there are financial benefits to self-insuring a small claim. This matter must be discussed with your insurance broker at the time of the incident/claim in order to make the best decision.
Q: Should I have an inventory of the contents in my home?
A: It definitely is a good idea to keep a list of your property in a fire-resistant location. Not only will this assist in the event of a total loss, it will enable you to properly assess the limit of coverage you require for contents coverage.
Q: Is my home-based business covered?
A: Personal insurance policies do not automatically cover businesses in the home. Additional coverage may be purchased; however, this must be discussed with your insurance broker.
