Questions and Answers

Why do I need health insurance when I'm in Canada?
Medical services in Canada can be very expensive. If you become sick or injured and need medical attention you may be unable to afford it if you don't have insurance. For example, a one-day stay in a hospital in Canada can cost $1,000 to $6,000. Health insurance makes sure you get the treatment you need without having a debt to repay.

I am an international student attending University of Victoria through a special program (i.e. exchange student) just beginning classes at University of Victoria. Is health insurance already covered as a part of my tuition or do I have to apply for it?
Medical Insurance is not included as a part of your University of Victoria tuition. University of Victoria has made arrangements so that you can purchase health insurance coverage. Please visit uvic.aon.ca where you can complete an application form and submit it online.

I am an international student at University of Victoria wishing to apply for University of Victoria International Student Insurance. You accept only Visa and MasterCard. As I am an international student, I am not entitled to a Canadian Visa card. So, I am not able to pay by credit card. Is there an alternate method of payment available?
We can process international cards. If you wish to pay by cash, cheque or debit card, you will need to attend either an orientation session on the University of Victoria campus or visit the Aon office once you arrive in Canada.

Should I apply for Aon insurance before or after I apply for BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) coverage?
Aon's insurance coverage will apply for the first three months you are in Canada. If you have a student visa that is valid for six months or more, you must purchase BC medical insurance. There is a waiting period of three months. Aon's insurance covers the three-month waiting period. If you purchase Aon's insurance before you arrive in Canada, it will take effect the day you leave your home country to travel to BC. You should apply for BC medical insurance (MSP) as soon as possible after you arrive in BC.
